Are you happy? Do you feel fulfilled?

I have a friend who’s going through a difficult period right now. We had a long conversation over the phone last week, and she asked me these questions:

Are you happy?
Do you feel fulfilled?

These are questions we all ask ourselves from time to time, and would probably like to ask others – it wasn’t a little award and almost impolite to ask these questions. But anyway, here is the answer I gave her, and my point of view related to this.

First of all, I don’t believe there’s such thing as absolute happiness. I don’t think there’s any human on this planet that is a hundred percent happy, no matter who or where they are.

Secondly, feeling fulfilled in life is like the feeling of fullness after a meal: you get hungry after a few hours. Life is not about reaching a destination; it’s a journey, an open road in front of you. You discover, learn and adjust on this path you walk on. And that’s part of its beauty.

If there were a certain destination that if reached, would give us a permanent and constant feeling of happiness and fulfillment, that destination would soon become just a static place from where you’d want to move on and escape. Because we humans need to grow, evolve and discover constantly.

  • kind of related to this! we human beings always thrive, being curious to learn more about new things. if we stop, we are gonna definitely deteriorate. the only way to evolve is never stop trying.

  • This is so true and a great reminder to us all! Thanks for sharing!

  • Terrific read. I think happiness is such a tricky thing to talk about. But I feel you are pretty right when it comes to happiness being a momentary thing we have to keep feeding.

  • I believe you may not always feel 100% happy, far too many temptations that make people want for more which gives them a sense of dissatisfaction. Happiness can be found in any small insignificant thing though.

    • maybe both are true. Happiness can be found in small things and in pursuing and wanting more. I think the key is to find the right mixture of both.

  • I agree! Nobody is ever truly “happy”. We feel it but we are also full of other emotions. We are human after all 😊

  • I like how you mention been all filled up after a meal. Most of the time I don’t feel that happy or fulfilled, but I think about the future which keeps me going

  • I don’t think it’s true that we can be ‘fulfilled’ once and for all- just like you, I think we’re on the constant journey, we get hungry once in a while and need to satisfied our appetites. I feel that once I stop learning or expanding my experiences, I’ll die. ‘Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish’- I nod to this line from Steve Jobs’ Standford speech 🙂

    • Ha, didn’t know that Steve Jobs said that. I feel the same about learning, understanding more, basically evolving as a human being. Couldn’t and wouldn’t stop. It’s a process and a journey. The joy is in the journey.

  • Try, fall down, try again and again. Never give up.
Life is all about embracing experiences.
